Ch-1 A Status Screen Only I Can See

"Um, let me sleep a little longer."

I try to turn off my smartphone alarm as usual, forcing my sleepy eyes open and tapping the screen.

"What? What is this screen? Have I played a game like this before?"

The screen usually just shows the time, but for some reason it shows an unfamiliar game status screen.

-----------

Miyazaki Mikado

LV1

HP: 10

ATK: 5

VIT: 5

INT: 3

AGI: 6

Skill: Gacha - 1

---------

"Hmm? My name? LV1? I've never played this game before. My AGI is above average... No, more importantly, my INT is 3..."

When I checked the status screen, it showed my name and level. There were various stats listed, with 5 seeming to be the average. But seeing my INT at 3 made me sad, even in a game.

Something even stranger caught my attention. Even though it looked like a game, my real name was displayed.

I usually use a variation of my name, "Amon," when playing games. I've never used my full name.

Then there was the skill column.

"What is this skill 'Gacha 1'?"

Of course I know what gacha means, but seeing it as a skill in an RPG-style status screen felt completely out of place. It says "Gacha 1," so does that mean it's at level 1?

"No, this is not the time!"

I was too engrossed in the screen of my smartphone, but I had no time to waste. I had to get ready for school.

I quickly shifted my focus, got ready, and ate the breakfast my mom had prepared. As usual, my dad and sister had already left the house.

It's Friday. If I can just get through today, I can enjoy the weekend.

"Well then, I'm off."

I put my smartphone in my pocket and left the house.

On the train I opened the status screen again. I still couldn't figure out what kind of game it was. At first I thought it might be an app, but it didn't seem to be. Oddly enough, the status screen was now set as my wallpaper.

Thinking it might be some kind of virus, I searched the Internet and found several posts, all dated today, describing similar symptoms. But despite my best efforts, I arrived at school without making any sense of it.

"Hey, good morning. Listen, there's something wrong with my smartphone."

"Morning, Mikado. What's so strange about it?"

"When I woke up this morning, this was my wallpaper."

I showed the screen of my smartphone to Okajima, my classmate.

"Hmm? What's wrong with it? It looks normal to me."

"No, this status screen isn't normal."

"Status? What are you talking about? Is this some kind of joke?"

"I'm not joking. This is serious."

"Hey, are you okay? It just looks like normal wallpaper. Are you trying to trick me or something?"

"..."

The conversation didn't go anywhere. Judging by Okajima's expression, he wasn't kidding.

Could it be that Okajima didn't see the status screen? On the other hand, the Internet posts mentioned that others were experiencing the same thing.

What was going on?

Frustrated and confused, I asked a few other classmates about it. They all reacted the same way as Okajima, insisting that there was nothing unusual on my screen.

Then what is it?

Why can only I see it?
